Living with My Medical Mystery
The symptoms started the summer of 2015. My sleeping was getting worse; I kept waking up every few hours and no matter how long I slept for, I was still tired. It was only until my doctor noticed my thyroid looked enlarged did I start testing for medical problems. Since thyroid problems are already in my family, they tested the thyroid antibodies and the results came back slightly elevated. Then my doctor suggested I get a sleep study to test for sleep apnea since that is also already in my family. Nothing; the test was normal. With nothing obviously wrong, my doctor recommended a gluten free and dairy free diet and various supplements to improve my energy. And with that, I went off to college. Right after I went to the campus, the nausea started. Whenever I ate, I would get waves of nausea. I would spend a majority of the day so nauseous that walking made it worse. It was almost unbearable.

The Best Recipes for a Ketogenic Diet
I started the Keto diet on my doctor’s orders. I had never heard of it before. All I heard was no grains, low fruits, dairy, meat, and veggies. All I could think was what am I supposed to eat. After a moment of complete disagreement with my new diet, I started researching what it means to be on the Ketogenic diet. I found a lot of recipes that sounded amazing. I learned about alternative flours, such as almond flour, tapioca flour, and coconut flour. I learned about alternative sugars, like Stevia. I learned how to eat healthy while still having the yummy sweetness that I craved, including an almond flour carrot cake for my birthday that was amazingly delicious!

Family Is Very Important
I’ve spent almost three years suffering from severe symptoms of something that has yet to be diagnosed. The symptoms started the summer before I started college. When I went to my doctor, he told me that I should go on a gluten free dairy free diet and take five different supplements for energy and digestion. With that, I went to college. I was 19, six hours from home, and without a license. From the start, I was already isolated from my classmates. I was shyer than all of my roommates, and I had difficulty finding food to eat on campus or anywhere nearby. As the semester continued, I become more isolated. I was usually alone, whether it was in my dorm, in the classrooms, or in the cafeteria.
