G-Ma's Carrot Cake
The first time I had carrot cake was back in my elementary school days. Nearly 2 years after my family moved back to Ottawa, ON, Canada after living in Boston, Massachusetts, USA for eight years. A shy and awkward 9-year-old who had been thrust into a whole new environment with no good friends at that time. I was playing basketball for our town league and managed to have fun with those kids. However, those moments only lasted for a few hours, a couple of days out of the week. Canada teaches French from an early age all the way up to high school. Because my family moved to the U.S. when I was just 1-year-old, I lost the chance to learn French during my early years. Not to mention that I had a pretty noticeable Boston accent. The neighbourhood kids had their clicks already and weren't that kind. So, you can imagine the loneliness and stress that was felt having to leave all my old friends behind, trying to learn how to fit into a whole new school system, struggling with a second language, and of course the slight grammatical differences between American and Canadian English. It was hard and caused me and my parents a lot of stress.

Antique Mirror
The mirror showed a reflection that wasn't my own. It had my height and build, but it wasn’t me. On the other side, I saw black claws protruding from my fingers. The lower half of my legs were bent at odd angles and resembled the hind paws of a wolf. And my face…it wasn’t there. A gloomy shadow covered the entire head. Two small white eyes were the only things that could be seen. I don’t know how long we stood staring at each other. Even if it was a few seconds, it felt like an hour. The figure looked like it was breathing heavily from the way its slightly hunched shoulders moved up and down. I glanced around the mirror and noticed we stood at the end of a hallway. Behind me, I saw an endless row of doors on either side. How did I get here?

First Born
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Just the sight of the old cabin filled Stacy with a sense of dread that left her cold whenever she awoke the next day. It was impossible to ignore as it stood off to the side, dark, decrepit, empty, and always lurking. Stacy tried not to look, but the flame kept calling her. She tried so hard to focus on the missing piece of her heart but its pull was too strong.

It's All My Fault
I was in the middle of packing my belongings for the long voyage ahead. Only a few days until the RMS Titanic gets its grand send-off. "David! Thank you for meeting me. I can see you're very busy." My friend Jim, who I’ve worked alongside for many years, entered the room.

Bus Stalker
This story took place during my first year of college. Back then, the bus system in my city was a complete hit or miss in terms of being reliable. Unlike most of my friends, I lived the farthest from downtown in a recently developed suburban neighborhood. Very few busses had routes that ventured out the newly built-up area. The ones that did, the 177 and the 175, only came around in 30-minute intervals for a couple of hours at a time in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

The Importance Of Self-Confidence
When we have a passion for something, we often compare ourselves to the experts around us. Not understanding that they've been doing it for years. It's important to keep in mind that your first few attempts won't be what you expected. Sometimes, however, we want to stop altogether when things don't go our way. This doesn't mean that you should give up, though. Only practice makes perfect.
