Try Everything

The #1 Tip to Fully Experience Food

For only a small portion of my life have I been a picky eater. That was between when I was 0 to about 6 years old. In that time frame, I usually only ate the following items:

  • Hot dogs (this was truly my addiction)
  • White bread
  • Chef Boyardee's ravioli
  • Peas (the only vegetable I would eat)
  • Peanut butter

As you see, I wasn't eating much of a variety. Also, I didn't care too much about my health. Anyhow, when I was little I still loved food, but I hadn't begun to realize what amazing kinds were available to me. I luckily had parents that never gave up on forcing me to try things. From years of them making me eat the new, weird things on their plates, I had started to develop a liking to trying unique foods and my taste began to adapt.

The only problem for me was that most of my friends were picky eaters. Once I had gotten older, I just couldn't grasp the thought that someone wouldn't even TRY something new to see if they'd like it. It's different to taste something and not enjoy it, but not even attempting to experience the flavor made me so annoyed. When my friends and I were altogether I was always seen as the "exotic" person. Compared to them, I had eaten so many seemingly "odd" foods that most them didn't even know some of the things I'd bring for lunch.

Trust me, I tried and tried to get them to stretch on a limb and try things, but none of them would. If I even got someone to taste a small amount, they'd already have the disposition that it tasted disgusting which altered their thoughts and made them nervous.

The point I'm trying to get to is that openly trying new things is a life-changer!

I can't fathom growing up with different parents so that I could eat chicken tenders and plain hamburgers everyday and be satisfied. Although there's nothing wrong with that, there's so much more the world has to offer. Different cuisines, preparations, utensils, and mannuerisms. It makes the simple act of eating so much more exciting and enjoyable.

I get that sometimes it's scary to just go and try some completely new food, but really what's the harm. If you don't like it, spit it out. If you do, well now there's a whole new type of food you enjoy. It may seem hard, but it's honestly so simple, and you can find things that you really love.

For example:

I had never tried Indian food until about 6 months ago. Crazy, I know, but I just never had gotten the opportunity. I went to a restaurant and ordered something I've never tried or really heard much about, which was chicken tikka masala. Turns out, I loved it, like REALLY loved it, and now Indian is my favorite type of food at the moment, although it changes pretty frequently.

I just want you to take the message that trying new food isn't scary, it's exhilarating. Turn away that scared voice in your head and just take a little risk! You'll thank yourself in the long run.

Here are some foods to try if you want something new, but taking the risk is still a bit uncomfortable for you:

  • Hummus
  • Tikka masala
  • Sushi (California roll)
  • Scallops
  • Pad thai
  • Gyro

I find these things to be quite different from the typical American diet, but are usually liked by many people.

So, the next time you're faced with the decision to taste something different, go for it! You never know what your new favorite food may be.
