I Slapped My Mama
Written for the Nourished Challenge. Another migraine... There are many causes for these debilitating afflictions. Once it grabs hold of you, there is no mercy until it decides you've suffered enough and mysteriously goes away. In my case, I owe recovery to metabolism: Ridding the body of chemicals that are no longer useful or were never useful. Synthetic compounds we have little knowledge of that were never meant for our particular physiology. We learn through trial and error.

Before I jump into the challenge I thought it’d be best to add a few notes for context. Baba means grandmother in Ukrainian and varenyky is a type of Ukrainian dumpling that can be served savoury or sweet, depending on the filling. If you’re unfamiliar with varenyky, you may have tried Polish pierogi? To the best of my knowledge, they’re essentially the same thing. What I am certain of though, is that after 30+ years of taste testing, I’ve never met a varenyky or pierogi I didn’t like.
Navy-Style Macaroni
“Here’s your mommy!” My mom said as I entered our apartment, handing me my 4-month-old baby and shaking off her hands as if she just carried around a ton of bricks.

Atchoo! Picked up more than the mail at the post office. Guess that does happen. When returning from the post office, forgot to wash my hands. Unfortunately, that was my bad. Because my calendar shows that the only places where my physical being has been were home and the post office. So, it was easy to narrow it down to that location.

When my stepdad passed away by suicide, I gained twenty pounds. From grief and stress, and also from the countless dishes dropped at our door. In the aftermath of the funeral, as my mom and I temporarily moved into my grandma's house, food followed. A truth well-known is that people will rally around you in a time of need, and one way they know they can help while still leaving room to grieve is by providing meals.

Growing up, I was lucky to have a grandma who prepared delicious meals that could both comfort and heal. Her culinary approach was simple, yet wonderful, as she instilled love, care, and a lifetime of expertise into every meal. Grandma's kitchen holds numerous upbeat recollections for me, but one in specific sticks out: the day I gotten her relieving chicken noodle soup when I required it the most.

The time I was offered this dish, it was a chilly winter evening. I had just returned home after a particularly challenging day at work, feeling exhausted and a bit defeated. The weight of the world seemed to rest on my shoulders, and I longed for something that could provide solace and warmth.

French fries are the most highly consumed snack all over the world. No matter if it is a special occasion, lunchtime, midnight snacking time, or an evening tea time, hot and crispy fries are definitely a treat for everyone rather it's your kid or you yourself. Potatoes generally have the tendency to release water because of which French fries gradually lose their crispness as their temperature drops and eventually become soggy.

Poke. It seems like it's everywhere these days. Everyone and their Mama/Papa/Aunty/Uncle/Sistah/Braddah/Cousin/Friend has opened up some sort of poke business, eaten at one of these shops, or at the very least, seen references about a poke place at least once in their lifetimes. It is currently a popular source of nourishment around the world, and due to its growing fame, has been featured on TV, print, radio, blogs and vlogs all over.

Grandma's Beef Stew
My grandma's beef stew is something that I feel most all of us women in the family know how to cook. Well, any one of us that has ever taken any amount of time to learn it that is. I was first given the recipe when I was just 19 years old and marrying my highschool sweetheart. My aunt had decided to do a special activity at my bridal shower where all the women wrote down recipes and any advice they may have for me as I embarked on this new journey in life. My grandma wrote down a couple of recipes that day for me that she knew I held dear to my heart that were from her kitchen but this one has always been able to make a rainy day seem bright and even a sunny day brighter. It is put together with love, care and all the aspects of a good cook. I believe every single one of us probably cook this dish a little differently, each adding our own flare to it but also somewhat sticking to the original recipe. My grandma likes to say that this dish is about emptying out your pantry and your freezer, anything that needs to be cooked can have a chance to get cooked within this dish. This dish is about family....So, without further pause you will need..
