My Personal Banana Bread

The Perfected Classic

The single most common recipe that every home cook will ever make has to be banana bread. In this recipe it not only uses product that most people would assume to have gone bad or undesirable, it also makes a wonderful gift for the people out there, that struggles to gift for their relatives that are on a budget. Even though I personally love to make this at home for myself (Hint: this recipe will make your entire kitchen smell wonderfully for the remainder of the afternoon).

When baking soda and baking powder became popular, it helped increase the use of banana bread. The use of Bananas didn’t appear until the 1870 by Lorenzo Dow Baker. It took over 60 years for the banana to be added to the list of different bread desserts. Some historians believe that the banana became popular during the Great Depression. It became popular because housewives could use the bananas after they became brown and unsatisfactory. They realized that if the bananas became brown enough, then they could use in desserts like Banana Bread. Other people believe that the recipe was established by the companies that found baking products to help increase the need for their product.

Some other variations of the very famous Banana Bread is Banana Raisin Bread, Banana Nut Bread, Chocolate Banana Bread and Banana Muffins. All of these variations of the recipe are all based off the original version. Even though, some people believe that the original version is the best overall recipe in the group.

Even though Banana Bread is very easy to make, there are some skills and equipment that you need to carry out the classic recipe. The equipment that you need is an oven, a wire whisk, sifter, medium sized mixing bowl, and a loaf pan. Some of the skills that you must possess is the ability of creaming, sifting and measuring. For the best results grind fresh Cinnamon from Cinnamon Sticks. Some other creative ideas that I have also tried is a multi layered Banana Cake with pumpkin spiced cream cheese frosting. The only difference between the two recipes is that you need to make the frosting, use a cake pan instead of a loaf pan, and after you bake the cake you need to cut the cake perfectly in half so that you can make a multi layered cake. Even though the layered option is optional, but adds another dimension of Culinary genius. In order to make the frosting you will need 4 cups of powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 12 ounces of cream cheese (room temperature), 8 tablespoons of unsalted butter, and 1/3 cup of pumpkin puree. In order to make the frosting place the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl set to side, then place the cream cheese and butter in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle and beat at medium speed until smooth, turn the mixer on slow and add the cinnamon mix until smooth, then add the pumpkin mix on medium speed and mix until smooth.

In this recipe you need the following:

  • 1/2 Cup of Butter
  • 1 Cup of Sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • 4 Bananas
  • 1 1/2 Cups of Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Cream together the Butter and Sugar
  3. Add eggs and Bananas
  4. Combine well
  5. Sift together; Flour, Baking Soda, and Salt
  6. Add to creamed mixture
  7. Add Vanilla and Cinnamon
  8. Mix until combined. DO NOT OVER MIX!!!!
  9. Pour into heavily greased loaf pan
  10. Bake for 1 hour
