Topic: Pie

So to make a perfect pie, you need to nail the pie crust. There are three simple ingredients butter or solid fat, flour, and extremely cold water. Here are a two perfect crust recipe, pick the one you want.

  • 1 1/4 Cups of flour
  • 1 Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 Cup of chilled butter
  • 1/4 Cup of ice cold water

Add the flour, salt, and butter in a bowl and use your fingers to combine the butter with the flour, slowly add the water, you might not need it all. When adding the water, the dough needs to form a ball. Wrap it in plastic wrap and chill it for one hour.


  • 2 Cups of flour
  • 10 Tablespoons of chilled butter
  • 2 Egg yolks
  • 1 Pinch of salt
  • 5 Tablespoons of ice cold water

Combine the flour, salt, and butter, using your fingers combine it all together. In a small bowl, mix the egg yolks with the water and slowly add into flour. When the dough starts to form a ball wrap it up with plastic wrap and chill for one hour. 

To make a perfect pie, you really need to nail the crust. Buttery and flaky is what you want in a perfect crust. Also, nailing the filling is important for a good pie.

When you put the crust at the bottom of the pan, always use a fork to make little tiny holes, this helps prevent it from exploding in the oven and not make giants bubbles. When making a pie that needs the crust to cover the top entire top of the pie, always cut little slits on the top, it allows steam to escape the pie and not explode in the oven.

There are different types of pie such as cream pies, fruit pies, and savory pies.

Types of cream pies are chocolate pie, chocolate silk pie, coconut cream pie, banana cream pie, strawberry cream pie, key lime pie, and custard pie.

The base ingredients of almost any cream pie are milk, heavy cream, sugar, eggs, and the fruit or main component of your choice.

Types of fruit pies are apple, cherry, blueberry, strawberry, mixed berry, peach, rhubarb, stone fruit, cranberry, huckleberry, and pear.

The base ingredients of fruit are the fruit you choose, cornstarch, and sugar.

There is also the pecan pie, lemon meringue, pumpkin pie, and sweet potato pie. 

There are also savory pies, not just sweet pies. Such as pot pie, tourtiere, cheese and onion, tamale pie, pork pie, meat pie, and much more.

I personally don't do savory pies except for pot pies, they are a family favorite. 

To nail the filling, keep it simple and basic but flavorful. It doesn't need to be hard or take a long time to do.

Some tips for perfect pie making are keeping the dough as cold as possible, not frozen. When it comes to apple pie, there are a few ways to make it; you can use cooked apples or uncooked apples,  and when done properly, they will both taste great.
