New York, arguably, has some of the best food in the world. Many New Yorkers claim that their food is the best in the world. Tourists from all over come to eat the wonderful food that is found in the big apple. Whether you live there, or are visiting, here are some tips for what you should put at the top of your foodie list.

Pizza

Pizza in New York is still cooked in a wood-fired oven. It has a nice char to it, and all of the toppings are fresh. The slices are big, warm, and delicious. Is your mouth watering just thinking about it? The margherita pizza is a fan fave, and if you can’t decide what to get, you can’t go wrong with that choice.

Bagels

The bagels seem to taste better in New York than the rest of the country. Some people say it is due to the water… but honestly I don’t care what it is all I care about is getting that bagel into my stomach. The bagels are freshly made by hand each day. They are soft on the inside, and have a nice crunchy crust. They are even better when they are topped with jam made from seasonal fruit.

Fruit

Mentioning fruit above, New York has some great homegrown fruit. The fruits in season are to die for and you should take advantage of them. In New York, fall is when you want to get your apples. It is the apple state for a reason. Grapes and raspberries are other fall fruits. Summer fruits are cherries, blackberries, peaches, and strawberries. You can’t pass these up!

Chicken Riggies

Ever heard of them? Chicken riggies are an upstate New York Classic. This Italian-American dish originated in Utica, New York. It includes rigatoni pasta (that’s where the riggie came from), chicken, a creamy tomato sauce with sweet and hot peppers, and other spices.

Cheesecake

New York is also the home of the cheesecake. This dessert was invented in New York back in 1929. The cheesecake is thick, yet the texture should be fluffy. It should be heavy, but not too heavy. The crust can never be soggy. There is the right balance of sweet and savory in a good cheesecake. During the right season, it can even be topped with fresh berries, or the berries can be cooked into the cheesecake.

Pastrami on Rye

The first pastrami sandwich was served in New York City in 1888. The pastrami is made from beef, and is pickled with special herbs and spices. It is then pressed, and can be smoked and steamed. This process does take some time, but the results are well worth it. The rye bread it is served on is baked fresh, and the pastrami is piled on. It is often topped with mustard or sour pickles among other toppings. Sandwich lovers can agree this is one of the best sandwiches out there.

Buffalo Wings

If you think you love buffalo wings, but have never had buffalo wings in NY, then you are in for a treat. Buffalo wings originated in Buffalo, NY when a mom was trying to gather some food for her son and friends one night. She had a bunch of leftover wings from chicken they had eaten, and decided to fry them up. The Anchor Bar in Buffalo, NY is the restaurant they originated from. Wing fans everywhere should be running to get these wings.

You'll be surprised at the wonderful food that you will have in New York. Native New Yorkers know what I am talking about when I say these foods are the top of the line. If you have never tried them you need to!
