Puppy Chow

A Classic Recipe

Over the holidays, I have made a lot of sweets. One of the most popular that I made was puppy chow. It was surprising to me, as I found myself sharing the recipe over and over, that there are a lot of people who have never eaten puppy chow or that have never even heard of it. Mostly older generations, it seems did not grow up with this treat, as I did. (Shocking, right?!) Since this is a recipe that I absolutely love making and eating, I've decided that is important to share it with anyone who may not know of its existence.

Puppy chow is an easy to make treat that you can snack on for days afterward. All you need is a few ingredients that you might even have on hand already (and if not, they're ingredients that you can find cheap in any grocery store).

(Please note that this recipe used half a box of cereal, so adjustments might need to be made if you don't want quite so much. Also, this is very thickly coated with the chocolate and peanut butter.)

Ingredients

  • Any kind of Chex cereal (Or I've used shredded wheat, and it works fine)
  • 1 Bag of Milk Chocolate Chips
  • 2 Cups Peanut Butter
  • 1/2 Cup of butter
  • Powdered Sugar (lots of it)

Directions

In a small saucepan, on low heat, mix together the chocolate chips, butter, and peanut butter and allow them to melt. Make sure to stir often to avoid burning the mixture. This should only take a few minutes, take off the heat once everything is melted.

In a large bowl, pour in your desired amount of cereal, keeping in mind that you will be mixing in this bowl (don't overfill it or you might make a mess when mixing in the rest of the ingredients). If you have to, you can put half of what you want, and then do the rest after that's fully mixed together.

Pour your now melted peanut butter and chocolate mixture slowly onto the cereal. It helps if you pour a little bit, and then mix, and then pour, and then mix, and so on. Stir it all together to make sure that every bit of cereal is evenly coated. This may take a few minutes to accomplish. In the event that all of the cereal is not evenly covered, melt more chocolate and peanut butter to cover it (but make sure that there isn't a bunch of unmixed chocolate and PB sitting at the bottom of the bowl, I've made that mistake).

Once it's all mixed together, pour a good amount of powdered sugar into the bowl. Mix slowly, being sure to, once again, coat all of the cereal. At this point, you can sort of estimate how much you need. If there's not enough to coat it, then add more. If there's too much powdered sugar, it's not going to stick to the cereal, it will just settle at the bottom of the bowl.

After it's all mixed and coated with powdered sugar, you're basically done. You can now enjoy your treat! However, especially if you've added a lot of sugar, there is a quick step you can take to clean it up a bit. You can use a colander or strainer and pour in the cereal in order to gently shake out the excess powdered sugar, or you can do the same with a large spoon with holes in it, scooping out a few pieces at a time, giving it a shake, and then placing it into a container where you plan to store the snack. This will make it much less messy and make it look more presentable.

Optional: Adding candies like M&M's, or pretzel sticks to the mix can make it more interesting and give you more variety!

ENJOY!
