5 Must Eat Places in New York City

NYC is a haven of food. I've put together my favourites from this majestic city.

I recently took a trip to NYC, which was one of the best trips I've ever had! They don't joke when they say it's the "city that never sleeps," and the Big Apple didn't disappoint when it comes to food, too. NYC is a mammoth place and with food stalls, restaurants, cafes, and takeaway places on every street, it can be a mine field if you're looking for a place to refuel and unwind. So to help you on your way, I've included some of my favourite joints to grab some good old fashioned American grub:

1) Russ and Daughters—127 Orchard St, New York, NY 10002

Wow. What can I say about this place to do it justice? I had read about R&Ds before going to New York and from the get go knew that this would be one place I had to visit for breakfast. This fabulous restaurant serving traditional Jewish food is not one to be missed. Really recommend "The Classic"—a board of bagels, smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomatoes, red onion, and capers. So simple but so delicious. (We also indulged in the Babka French Toast which was also so delightful!)

2) Meadowsweet—149 Broadway, Brooklyn, NY 11211

This was a bit of a "blow-out" holiday for us and we decided before we went to NYC that we wanted to experience some fine dining at a Michelin Star restaurant. As I'm a pescatarian (someone who eats fish but not meat), it can sometimes be a bit of a challenge to find appropriate places to eat—especially with a meat feast lover for a boyfriend! But this place fit the bill perfectly. With really interesting flavours, textures and dishes, Meadowsweet has a Mediterranean/American fusion, which compliments each other perfectly.

3) Bubby's—120 Hudson Street, New York, NY 10013

I don't know about you, but when I think of American pancakes, I think of a stack of light fluffy pancakes piled high. So when we typed "best pancakes" in to Google, Bubby's was the top result, and I can definitely see why! With two different types of pancakes on offer—James Beard (light and fluffy), and Sourdough (thinner and chewy)—there is something for everyone, and with a selection of fillings and toppings, there's bound to be something for everyone! I went for the James Beard pancakes with chocolate chips and boy oh boy, did I leave a happy girl! You absolutely must visit here for a hearty breakfast!

4) Bread's Bakery—18 E 16th St, New York, NY 10003

Now this one may not be for everyone, but as an avid amateur baker I am all about finding good local baked goods when I'm abroad, and Bread's Bakery was heaven! I'd read amazing things about their Nutella Babka Bread (can you tell I had a bit of a Babka obsession on this holiday?) and just had to try it for myself. If you're a lover of Nutella, then you'll love how gooey and indulgent is it. At $15 a loaf, it isn't cheap, but my god, is it worth the money (and the calories!).

5) Central Park—14 East 60th St, New York, NY, 10022

Okay so I know this isn't strictly a restaurant or anything, but I couldn't have this list without mentioning Central Park. If you're fortunate enough to have a beautiful, sunny day in the Big Apple, then use the time to grab yourself a picnic and go enjoy a glorious afternoon in this tranquil place. You'll forget where you are! It really is amazing and I would definitely recommend to anyone.

This barely scrapes the surface of all of the mega food at your fingertips. Street food is also massive here and definitely worth spending a buck or two indulging in hot dogs, pretzels, popcorn, and all of the other great foods the streets has to offer. This was just my first visit to NYC and I, for one, can't wait to go back and see what delights await for me on my next trip!
